Lard is well known for making the most flavorful and flaky pie crust. It is also superb to make raw-fried potatoes, tamales, and deep-fried delights. Simply substitute lard for shortening. FRESH RENDERED LARD Pie Dough Recipe 2 ¼ Cup Sifted All-Purpose Flour Pinch of Salt ½ Cup Lard 5 Tablespoon Cold Water Sift flour and salt together. Add half of lard and cut in until mixture is as fine as meal. Add remaining lard and continue cutting until particles are size of a large pea. Sprinkle water gradually over mixture. Pa Dutch Culture PENNSYLVANIA DUTCH OR 'DEITSCH' VERSES PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN Around these parts, we like to refer to ourselves as the Pennsylvania Dutch. Although a misnomer, there’s no turning back. Lore says the English misheard the term ‘Pennsifaanisch Deitsch’ (translates to ‘Pennsylvania German’) to be ‘Pennsylvania Dutch’. Our ancestors emigrated from German-speaking areas of Europe, not the Netherlands. In fact, our regional dialect (also known as Pennsilfaanisch Deitsch) is very similar to those of the Palatinate region of the Rhineland area in Germany. In short, Pennsylvania Dutch and Pennsylvania German are two phrases that are used interchangeably to describe the same heritage
